I went in the Corp in January of 52, then to Atsugi, Japan Marine Barracks for 2 years, and spent 2 years as a Drill Instructor at MCRD Diego, and then Instructor at Sea School! Ariizona Highway Patrol, Congressional Assistant, and at 70 quit as an Advocate for young Hopi and Navajo boys with the Attorney Generals Office in Arizona! I distinctly remember the Gas Masks! I found a census from Witchita County, Texas same name date of birth was in 1930 so I'm pretty sure they are decendents but not this Marine. As he served in Korea in 1954 so he would have been a young man at that time. I would like to return this bible to a living relative of this Marine if possible. If I can't locate one I will as a Veteran keep it preserved in his Honor with the Dignity it deserves. That night an 81 mortor landed beside me put a hole in my leg. The next time I saw him was on the Hospital Shirp Repose I would like to in touch with him. He was a corpsman from 1952 to 53, and was awarded purple heart. His name was Bobby/ Bob Hays. He was from southern Illinois, Johnston City, Williamson County. At the beginning of the war, he served on the USS Toledo supporting the Inchon landings, then received further training at Camp Pendleton before going to Korea. I don't know if this helps, but he talked about 2 friends named Carl and Robbie, and always carried a can of peanut butter with him, even in combat. Keywords: |

He recieved a Purple heart in December 1950 for an ankle injury. He left it on the beach when they were evacuated. The company records of this were lost. My dad, Marine Corps T.Sgt. Dale STROPES was killed at Chosin on December 3rd, 1950. He received the NAVY CROSS and SILVER STAR in Korea. I was born 2 months later, so I never knew my dad and my mother's remembrances have always seemed limited. She is now suffering from severe Alzheimer's, so any chance of learning anything more from her about my father is gone. Also gone are all relatives whoever knew him in Illinois.
