Looking for Grandfather Richard O'neill

Comments: I am searching for this man, I believe him to be my grandfather. He would have been engaged to a woman named Kay. My father believes he was in his early 20s at the time. Also he may remember the story my Grandmother told my father that they were leaving on a train togethor but her family came and pulled her off...they never met again..or so the story goes. If you have any information about this man please contact me.. I would love to meet this man, and introduce him to my children.

Keywords: This info. may or may not be correct but this is what my father told me. Richard O'neill was in the Marine Corps stationed on Camp Pendleton around 1950? I believe he was in what is called the 1st division, 1st common section...he also served in the Korean War. He was from Chicago. These are all the facts I know.

Keywords: Amphib unit at White's Beach between 1954 - 56, I believe. It was his second tour. Just before he was honorably discharged in the rank of Buck Sgt. He was instructing at Quantico, VA. Would like to know what the buck Sgt. chevrons looked like for that time and what any metal insignia looked like. Also, am looking for his 1/2 brother Charles Gray, stationed at White's beach at the same time. They had housing across from each other, but never acknowledged each other. My dad passed Feb. 18, 2008. I have done my utmost to bring all his US Marine Corps life together for him, my siblings and I. I am making a shadow box of my dad's Marine legacy for my brother. Any info on the above would be so gratefully appreciated. I am a U.S. Capitol Police Officer of 25 years. [ made my dad proud because he did time as an M.P.] I would really like to hear if anyone remembers my dad or his 1/2 brother Charles. I was assigned to Tank Platoon, Hq. Co. First Armored Amphibian Bn. as a Sergeant and Tank Commander of Tank 5, an M4A3E8 Sherman with a 76 MM Gun. The only name I remember was a Corpsman by the name of Feingold from the Seattle area. I remember he got in some trouble in Kyoto when we went on R & R. I believe his Dad owned a large salvage company. Our unit was entrenched above the Han River, I believe near the town of Yung Dong Po. If there is anybody out there who remembers me, I would very much like to hear from them. I wish I had thought of doing this years ago but I was'nt to well versed in computers until the last couple of years. I guess we are never to old to learn new things.

Col. Goodpasture was Bn CO and we were on the Kimpo Penninsula. Our positons were named for States, Washington, Montana, Maine, New Mexico and Florida. We were equipped with LVTA (5) Tractors and the Maint. Platoon Leader was Gunner "Goat" Martin who knew all, and more, there was to know about LVTA's. A typically wonderful Marine and friend. 1st Sgt. was "Mother" Hale and the Company Gunny was Technical Sgt Matthew Doetsch, a tall red headed German with a handle bar mustashe. Gunny Doestch arrived with the Brigade served in Korea during most of the war. He is mentioned in Col. Andrew Geer's 1952 book, "The New Breed". Then Lt. Col Geer was the Regimental Executive Officer during my time there. Sgt McDonald was my Platoon Sgt, a smaller version of Gunny Doetsch and a hell of a Marine.

Comments: Hi. I went over on the 9th draft and was in Kobe and then moved to Camp McGill near Yokuso (sp), Japan till November 1951. I was in A Company (in Korea) from November 1951 till about March or April 1952 then the rest of the Bn came over from Japan. I then moved up to BN S3 which was the FDC for the firing Batteries.

A Company FDC and HQ was at Tongjin, Kimpo Penninsula. At one time we had an Army 90 mm gun and two Army Search lights attached to A Company. Plus twice we had a Platoon go over the Island of Kanghwa-DO and fire at North Korea from there.

I was the NCOIC of the FDC of A company. Major David Foos was the CO and I believe a Capt Bennet was XO and a Lt Johnson from Iowa was PLT leader for the FDC.

I want home in May of 1952.

Comments: My father John Devereaux Hall was proud to have served with his fellow Marines in Korea. He told me about going down the ramp of the LST (in his Armored Amphip)into the water, "feeling like he was gonna keep on going strait down to the bottom!" He's been deseased since 82, and I still miss him very much! I have much more to say; but I'd rather share it with any of his buddies out there, and or their kin. One thing that may sticks out in any of the 250 or so of the men in his Company. On their ship heading to Korea he was working in the Kitchen when a large rat ran the kitchen. He chased it and grabbed a meat cleaver as he ran through the galley. He chased it into a corner next to some gallon cans. The rat raised up fangs and claws showing! My Dad chopped him and the cans up taking care of the "Foe". Well a couple days later the CO (or XO) called a company formation. Then he called for Cpl Hall front and center! My Dad thought,"Oh sh_t what did I do now?" Then the CO preceded to read a homemade citation: It stated about how "Cpl Hall armed with only a meat-cleaver, risking life, and limb threw himself into the jaws of the foe; The common enemy... A Rat!" It ended saying "We the mice and men of 1st Armored Amphib salute you Cpl Hall for a job well done. Then the CO pinned a "Rat Metal" on my fathers chest! The ribbon was made from a flour sack, connected to a star cut out from a post card, and in black felt pen had "Hero # 1" on it. My Dad said that that metal meant more to him than all his other metals put together...

If anyone out there in internet land thinks they knew him please contact me by email, or phone call, or letter.

Thanks,

Michael D. Hall

Keywords: Many people called him "Johnny". He was on an LVTA-4/5? armored Amphibian Tank with the 1st Armored Amphib Batt. He on Wolmi-Do, the Kempo air field, Inchon. His unit received Presidental Unit Citations. I know his unit came up on (at least) one Russian make T-34 tank and the "75 pack howitzer round bounced off it!" They called in an air strike to take the T-34 out. I have other accounts my father told me many years ago which I would love to share with anyone who has an interest his units history.

Comments: I arrived at B co.as a infintry Cpl.summer of 54. Co. C.O. was Capt.Gordy.I had never even seen a LVTA-5 before.I was sent to new rifle range as range coach Dec,Jan,Feb. than back to B co.as a gunner when we were moved to New Mexico position. The Bn. shipped stateside with Div. but B co. sent T.A.D.to 3 rd.Div. at Camp McGill near Yokosuka,Japan. Promoted to Sgt,I worked as TC in 3rd Plt. [Tk.#32]and as Plt.Sgt. We seemed to have run out of Staff Sgts, there were 4 "buck" sgt.s in the Co.We rejoined 1st. plt in Okanawa to shoot and break in a large bunch of replacements. I was then sent state side to be an instructer [A-5s] at Del Mar. I remember my friend from St Lewis, Sgt Hipphoff was sent to Okanowa with 1 st. Plt. Company CO was Lawrence,a Plt leader Lt.Kirsh, gunny was TSgt Dosh. Of the 4 sgt.s were Lumbra, Smith,Wetterholt, and myself.I remember getting a new 2nd Lt. platoon leader one rainy day while we were doing PM. The turret hatch opened and two muddy boots stepped onto my clean gun. After a few choice words the brass bars came into view and he said "Sgt ,can I have a few words with you out side." He appologised for getting mud on my gun but said he couldn,t have me speak to him like that. We got along fine later. I remember one of the tractors sinking in the bay, the TC was Cpl. Fisher, I don,t recall any big deal being made about it, nor getting it back to shore. I was discharged April 1956 at the school in Del Mar,Ca.

Comments: My first duty was as a forward observer on a hill overlooking the junction of the Han and Imjim rivers. There were four of us at that position. Timeframe was late 1954, probably around December. I remember names like LTC Stoll, MAJ Bray, 1LT Secrest (Fire Direction Control Officer), SGT Glenn Seymour, SGT Ulrich, MSG Weaver, TSG Reynolds, Les Wright, William Piscatelli, and Joe Psycho who used to drum on *everything*. Would love to hear from others that were there at around the same time. I remember we backloaded out of Inchon on 4 LSTs in convoy and it took over 30 days. One of the LSTs kept having steering difficulties and it would leave the formation frequently. We traded the Navy cooks C-Rations for fresh butter and jam and made sandwiches out of a whole loaf of freshly baked bread.

Reunions

Date: 3/18/99
From: Rev. John W. Coates Email address
My name is Rev. John W. Coates originally from Norristown, PA, though I
live in Delaware now. I read your info on the Korean War Vets Home
Page.

So decided to try to write. Perhaps this could be on the home page as a
message.

I started with the 1st Armored BTN when it formed on the West Coast at
Camp Delmar. I was in the Service Company the first few months. Then
went to Korea with Service Company and was in the First Amored Amtrak in
1950. The second time, when we went back to relieve B Company in April
1951, I was a gunner with A/5 in A Company. Captain Guy was our Company
Commander. Lieutenent Petty was the Adj. When we were in Korea with the
1st Armored we were FMF 1st Marine Division. When we were in Japan we
were the Pacific Pac.

I served COG 1 year, after serving 3 years before the war started. I
went home in the 7th draft
in 1951.

I have found a book called Across the Reef about the Armored Amphibs in
the different wars which focuses somewhat on the Korean operation as
part of the book. The author's name is Victor Croizat. He published
it in 1989. The original publisher was Blandford Publishers, though it
is distributed by Sterling Publishers, 2 Park Ave, NY, Ny 10002. Mr
Croizat's address, the last time I had contact with him, was 217 - 21st
Street, Santa Monica, CA 90402.

Len Meiners, a Marine from St. Louis Missouri, has tried to do reunions
with the 1st Armored Amphibs. You can contact him, if you wish, and
give him your address. His address is:
	8 Sunderland Court
	St. Charles, MO 63303
	Phone 314 928 0837
	Fax 314 821 6530

We are not aware of his having an e-mail address.

As I said, I live in Delaware now. You can reach me at the following
address:

	Rev. John W. Coates
	31 South Cleveland Avenue
	Wilmington, DE. 19805
	Phone 302-421-9046

A Company 1st ArmAmphibBn / Corpsmen in 1st ArmAmphib Bn Aid Station.

Served with 1st marine division as navy hospitalman (hm2) 1950 - 1954
looking for members of 1st arm. amphibs on Kimpo Peninsula.

I was origianlly attached to the 1st Armored Amphibian Batt., Kimpo
Pennisula - Kimpo Provisional Regiment, which included a British Unit, a
Turk unit, a Korean Marine Corps Unit, and a bunch of others I just
cannot remember.

I was in Able Company and later went back to Regt. to the Aid Station.
Then on to Dog med for awhile and then back to the states. Spent the
rest of my tour at Camp Pendleton as an FMF Transit Barracks Master at
Arms.

Great final duty. 1 Draft going to Korea overnight once a month and 1
draft coming back from Korea overnight. Had a jeep and driver and a lot
of time to loaf.

More from Marion Jim Douglas

I would like to pass on the name of Jim Douglas, FMF, HM2 who was with
Baker Company 1st ArmAmphibBn and then later, went back to Division to
H&S Company as Division Pharmacist.

His E-mail address is jdoug4@juno.com -
