Comments: 6-2008, I wish I kept in contact with some of the VAW Radar crew on the CVS-33 from 1966 to 1968, guys like: Williams (from down south), Sailor (the lifer), Roberts( the reserve-2 year),Cook (more crazy then me), THE ROCK Hagemeister (most liked guy in the group), the pain in the butt Chief Johnson (to mean to die), TINY (he was not always tiny),Jorgenson (wrong spelling, but I still remember him),and Rick the guy from Mexico (we bought our wifes a fur coat in Hong Kong, it seemed like a good idea after a few drinks). Hope to hear from one of you guys. John

Comments: Had a great few months at the NAS North Island photo lab in 1952 when I was a PHAN. Still have some memorable self-portraits I took while nobody was around, blew up, retouched and printed on the arial enlarger. Also a priceless portrait that was done one day when the 1st class in charge (don't recall his name) told me they needed a volunteer for a poster and I was the volunteer. He had me get in my best blues and did a full-front photo. Then blew it up lifesize, had it mounted on a board and sealed, then placed at the departure gate where we caught the nickel snatcher over to San Diego, next to a 6 foot mirror with a sign that read "If you look like this, you are ready to go on liberty". I still have a copy and I tell my grandkids that this is the most aquared-away sailor in the US of N. Also had a hair-raising experience when we went out to the runway, mounted a movie cam in the back of a pickup, and raced down the taxiway at 80 miles per hour shooting an F9F that was landing "wheels-up" on the adjacent runway. A shower of sparks and a lot of flying bits of metal later he spun out in a cloud of dirt ahead of us in the grass. Needless to say the pilot exited in one helluva hurry. Never did get to see the finished product as I was given orders to go to AN"P" school in Norman, Oklahoma the next week and bid a fond adieu. Good to see your message.
