Comments: I am looking to purchase the Yearbook - U.S.S. Bairoko from the years of 1951 to 1956. This would be a gift for my father. My mother threw the his yearbook of the Bairoko away. My father keeps asking about it. I have been able to download a picture of the ship for him. It would mean to him. Any ideas or leads greatly appreciated.

Comments: I am looking for shipmates of my father who served on the USS BAIROKO in the early to mid 50's. His full name is Robert B Overfield and he was an ET. I had at one time made contact with a couple of shipmates but my computer had a virus/worm and I lost everything I had. I am trying to put together a memory book about my dad for my nieces and nephews who haven't and won't have the chance to meet and get to know him.
Thank you so very much in advance
Sincerely,
Judith Overfield

Sugar King was our call name I posted here in 1997 and have never heard any info from anyone. Just decided I'd try again and update my email address. I don't see any mention of my unit and was wondering if you could provide me with any info on personnel.
Thanks Jerry.

Comments: Hello,
My father served on the Bairoko from June 10, 1953 - August 8, 1953. He was a MSgt., Marine, Supply Officer. His friends called him Gene and sometimes "Ham". He mentioned the Captain as Emmet O'Bierne and the C.O. as Lt. Col. Berteling. If you remember him or could provide us with information of others that might have served during this time, I would really appreciate it.
Sincerely and thank you. Debra Garraffa (daughter)

Comments: This is an odd request but I was never stationed aboard a ship. I spent three years and three months stationed at the Naval Air Station in El Centro, CA. One week end in Nov., 1951, I visited a friend, from my home town of Atlanta, GA, I think. I have forgotten his name. I visited him and ate chow aboard the CVE Bairoko in San Diego. It's funny how I can remember the ship so easy but don't remember the friend. This is a long shot, I know, but if anyone remembers any information from this time period, please let me know.
Thanks,
Walter ( Red ) Wilson

My father's name was James Robert Morris Long and her served on this ship during the Korean War. He was in the Bikini Atoll Islands during the hydrogen bomb testing. He passed away in 1997 from a rare cancer called VIPoma or Carcinoid Syndrome. He used to enjoy getting together with his ship mates at the annual reunions. I'm glad to see a website developed for the folks who served on that ship, if he were alive today that would have been a real kick for him to be able to log on and see what was going on. Thanks, Beth (Long) Weeks
