Comments: I was stationed at Camp Casey in Tungduchon from December 1969 to January 1971. I served as a 31E20 Field Radio Mech with the HQ&CO A, 707th Maintenance Battalion, 7th Infantry Division.
I'm getting ready for my last appeal for my AO compensation claim. I have Diabetes II, peripheral neuropathy of the extremeties, diabetic retinopathy and medically diagnosed as unemployable. So far I've been denied because Camp Casey is 10 miles south of the DMZ AND I didn't arrive on the base between April 1968 and July 1969.
Camp Casey supplied the field artillery, signal and engineer troops as support personnel along the DMZ when requested.
My job responsibilities as a field radio repair mechanic involved constant work in the field - "on the ground."
I know the herbicides had to still be in the ground when our unit arrived in December of 1969 and since I was part of the signal corp we had occasional guard duty along the DMZ when requested.
Please contact me if you were there during that time -Thanks.

AO Claim Denied for location |

Comments: I have my AO registry exam 3/15/2010. Thanks for the help. keep up the fight. Someday, and I hope to see it the VA will open the restrictions of Unit designation for AO claims. I knew about AO in Korea when I was there but I never knew that I would be a victim of its lasting effects. I was assigned to ASCOM Co. A 728 MP Bn.3/69-12/69, Co. A, 13th Sup & Serv. Bn, Yongsam 1/70-4/70. During my assignment to seven deuce eight I was detached to a very small unit at the Port of Inchon, Korean Regional Exchange (KRE)Depot. It was our task to provide armed military police escorts to all PX outlets across Korea. I made these trips to Munson, Tongduchon, the JSA and other locations north in 2nd and 7th division areas. As I never knew about the lasting effects of my exposure to the liquid covering our vehicles that originated from the adjacent land to the roadways I did not make specific notes or document my trips. My VA claim review supported my Diabetes II and related conditions but was denied because my base camp was ASCOM 17 miles south of DMZ. Please advise if you have any words of wisdom concerning this. PS I also was at Ft. Gordon for basic and AIT 9/68 - 2/69. I suffered from blister on my hands and was hospitalized for acute sinus infection at Ft. Gordon Army hospital for approx. 3 weeks. A recent favorable decision by VA was granted on the basis of AO exposure 1967 at Ft. Gordon however the claimant stated in his claim he personally used AO as late as 1969 on plant life near watersheds at Gordon. Please answer. John Clark

Comments: I was with a small MP Detachment at Camp Page. Our mission was in support of tactical Honest John nukes(4th Missile command and Hawk Batteries (B and D batteries), as a quick reaction force, and supported other military installations close to the DMZ. In the spring and summer of 1968 on patrols along the southern border of the DMZ we passed through areas north of Chuncheon and Sokcho that had been defoliated. The area around the MSA (nuke storage) was also defoliated. I have many of the same symptoms as describe by other vets which include, diabetes, aches and pain all over, spinal deterioration back, nerve damage in legs and feet, teeth problems (over 250 trips to dentist. VA is still investigating my case. I need help in determining the division level command that we supported.

Need TDY orders for AO Claim |

Kenneth Gersch wrote on 2009-11-23 05:53:37.0
Comments: Hello, I actually arrived at Clark AB, 1st Mobile Communications Group ( 1st Mob), around August, 1967. Looks like a TSgt Ivan D. Osborne was the NCOIC of Crypo Maintenance, and I spent a little over 4 consecutive years with the Mob...I never went TDY to Vietnam, but made quite a few trips to places in Korea, particularly Kangnung, Korea. It is called K-18. I wish I new what AF Sqaudron we supported there. Maybe someone can help me. Some VA guys told me that the Kangnung location was Camp Red Cloud, but I believe that was on the West side of Korea , not the NE side by the DMZ where Kangnung was. The reason I bring this up is because I have Prostate Cancer, was just operated for it last March, 2009, and am trying to get my VA Claim approved that my Cancer was from Agent Orange exposure in Korea around the time of April 1968-August 1969. TSgt Adelbert Howard was the NCOIC at that time and TSgt Charles Tate was the Line Chief....if that helps any. I know it was a long time ago because I was there from like Aug, 1967 till about May, 1972. I was also TDY there with TSgt Leonard Butler and SSgt Harold F. Hannon III, but am unable to locate them. My problem was that I am not able to get any TDY records for any TDY time I did with the Mob. There just are not any orders in my records. Not even medical records or even travel vouchers. I am not able to prove anything to the VA without orders and for some reason the Government just doesn't have anything on me. I am working with someone from a regional VA office who is trying to assist me, but it looks grim. Did the 1st Mob maintain some kind of Morning Report for guys when they went TDY, aren't flight logs maintained somewhere? Does anyone, have any knowledge of how TDY time was tracked???? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Ken Gersch k_gersch@yahoo.com

Comments: All USAF Security Police from Seoul to QuanJu were routinely sent to the DMZ and were quartered at the base south of the Freedom Bridge as a part of their required Combat Preparedness Training using the nearby Army ranges and performed road guard duties during weapons firing. We also conducted night combat training manouvers in the same area. I am now an Insulin dependant Type II diabetic -the VA denied the claim I filed for Agent Orange exposure.

Comments: I was stationed at Camp Howze 1977 - 1978 with one month at GP 115 and other locations within the DMZ. I now have Peripheral Nerve Disease, one of the symptoms of Agent Orange.
The VA will now cover veterans exposed up till May 975 or the end of the Vietnam War. However, those of us who were on the DMZ in 77 are out of luck at present.
I know in numbers there were few of us that actually worked the DMZ, but somehow we need to get the VA to extend the period of coverage to at least until 1981, which would be a fair scientific time frame for compensation.
If anyone knows how we can do this please contact me.

Comments: I wish I could share so much more, but really I can testifiy as I have to others including the Korean Herald when the Korean Government finally declassified and embarrased the US government about the use of AO so the Korean Soldiers could finally get some help. But it took still 2 or 3 more years for our government to finally recognize anyone or admit for our men it's use. The travisity of this still is that our government continues to lie, decieve, limit the actual use and spread of AO thru many parts of Korea. Please read my letter just written to another vet here for his question, glad to try to share whatever I can, it took me the loss of millions of dollars, health of myself and children, frustration and bankruptcy to finally get the admittance from the VA of my combat service as well as exposure to AO. Best wishes, Sincerley, Larry Anderson
Dear Paul, have we corresponded? Just looking here and saw your message. Answer is simple, Yes, Yes and Yes. I was a combat medic with extended duties and assignments, out of I-Corp, Camp Stanley, assigned TDY for much of my duty to Camp Mercer just south of Kimpo Air Base, south of Seoul. As part of my duties there I tried to care for every concern of my men. We were being over run with rats and mice, lice, etc. so I called in the Sanitation Engineers from Seoul, knew Col Bruger, Surgeon General so was able to get lots of things done. During the Spring thru summer of 1968 I was delivered, handled and sprayed AO all over our camp, all around our buildings, latrines, quanset huts, mess hall, etc. several times. I was also assigned various times to go with units along the DMZ and other places where I had no idea where we were. AO was widely, much more then reported, used. Also yes, it is embedded into clothes, dirt, plant, etc. and residual to that even after spraying it can contaminate. I was also there in Korea along the DMZ in 1977-78 and worked as special assignment for the commanding general of the 2nd Div IG team. I was given orders, probably general orders to all units as well, to remove all remaining supplies of Dioxin from warehoues through out all the 2nd Division. So we know it was present at least if not used even as late as 1977. After over 30 years of fighting I did go to Korea and testified for the Korean Herald and finally was granted recognition for my combat service and for exposure to Agent Orange. I have many problems, skin, heart, infections, irritable bowl, etc. and have a son with Spina Bifida and also a son with severe seizures. AO was only so far credited with Spina Bifida so my son now can get help under that program. Best wishes, Larry Anderson

I did have many trips to the DMZ but not on the line itself. I visted many Quonson Huts and handled many pieces of equipment during that time frame. Is is possible that I could have been exposed to any such agent. I have been ill for many years and do receive any compensation for this. Have any of you heard of such a thing.
