Comments: My father would NEVER talk about his service with the Airbourne Rangers in the early 1950's. I know he was behind enemy lines and spent some time in Europe during his service. I am not certain what Units he served with but believe he was part of some elite group of Rangers. Anyone that could help me learn more about his time with the Rangers please contact me. I am SOOOOOO very proud of him and want to able to pass this along to his grandchildren.

Comments: Hello, My oldest brother told me that my father was with 13th Rangers I know that he was in the Army and had parachuted and landed in a jeep broke all of his teeth and his ankles. (it was a night jump) My father passed away Easter Sunday March 23,2008. He was laid to rest in the Veterans cemetery in Exeter R.I.
My father had stories that he had told us of his time in the service and of people he had never forgotten. My father had Dementia at the end of his life and was very distressed when he spoke of people he lost and was mourning from his time in the Military. (I guess in his mind) he visited a fellow soliders grave all of the time and he cried for him. Although we knew full well that he hadn't gone anywhere that day. He had one story about having caught on fire in the foxhole I believe because he was so close to it due to the fact that it was bitterly cold. And an African American man putting him out with his coat and of course saving his life. He had another story of someone that carried pepperoni in the jacket and when things were bad He would give my father some of it I think just to lighten things up and my father told us how upset he was when this man was killed in action. When my step mother passed away (he was lost without her) and the Dementia was in it's begginings he would visit a friend that owned a junk yard -autos. and they would sit around and talk, when lunch time came they would invite him in for lunch and he would decline and sit in his truck to eat pepperoni, crackers and cheese. I so wish that I could remember the names of these people in these storied but unfortunatley I do not. It would have been nice to tell the families of these people how he had never forgot them and how somwhere inside him he grieved them still. My father also spent time in Germany.
I would like to hear from anyone that this sounds familiar to. And would cherish any stories of him anyone would care to share. Thank you. Sophie

Comments: While reading the book "To Fight With Interpity" about the U.S. Army Rangers I came across a passage about the 8th Army Ranger Company that mirrored many of my fathers stories about his time in Korea.
Passages about learning to do PLF's from the bed of a moving duece and a half and being attached to a Turkish Brigade. He recieved 3 Bronze Stars and 3 Purple Hearts, but he would never tell us about his combat experiences or what units he was assigned to.
His name was Guy Orsini jr.
If any body remembers a tall skinny Italian fellow from Ohio I would greatly appreciate the information.

Another, named Frank Levesy (sp) and the other I'm saddened to say I do not know. They were a tough breed that escaped their captors. I'm happy to say so or I wouldn't be here! I'm looking to find more information about/possibly meet/have a reunion for the other two men that escaped with my father. Thank you in advance.

Comments: I'm an Active Duty Officer in the U.S Army. In 1993 while assigned to the U.S Army School of the Americas at Ft Benning, Georgia I had the opportunity to attend the School Commandants Retirement Dinner at the Officers Club, sitting in the same table with me and my wife was the person I later learned was LT Pickett and his wife. Although we introduced each other and our wives, we just had a short casual conversation. It wasn't until a few weeks later while at the Infantry HQ's building at Ft Benning that I noticed a Ranger Hall of Fame display and read LT Picketts citation for bravery.
The biggest regret I have is that no one had informed me prior to then that I had been sitting at the same table with a Korean War hero. I wish I would have known so I could have done some research and could have talked to him about his experiences in Korea. I do recall his wife (a lovely lady) telling me that they'd met while he was in the post hospital recovering from his wounds; I got the impression that they had retired in the Columbus, Georgia area. Anyway I'd thought you'd be interested.

Comments: My father, CSM Phillip Moore (Ret) served in the 8th Airborne Ranger Co. and the 187 ARCT both during the Korean War. He is doing fine and still a Ranger at heart. I had the honor of attending the 1991 Korean War Ranger Reunion at Ft. Bragg while I was stationed there with SF. Quite an eye opener for a young airborne soldier..it may be "The Forgotten War" to most, but not to me. Thanks.

Comments: I am doing some research for a friend whos grandfather was in the war with the 8th Army Ranger Co. I noticed on his discharge papers that he has 3 Bronze battle stars, I am curious if any one can tell me from whaty dates and battle names or location names those battle stars would have been earned at. He was also awarded the CIB from his time in Korea. One last thing, in a matter of months he went from PFC to Sergeant how common was that? Does it mean he was an exceptional soldier? Thank You.

Sumner J. Kubinak - (8213AU)
Ted
I'm hoping you can help me with some information. I'm doing research
on my family tree. I'm trying to find information about someone who
was a cousin to my grandfather. His name is Sumner John Kubinak and
he was declared MIA in Unsan Korea 11/26/1950.
That is all I know. Can you help?
Susan Kubinak, DVM
e-mail: Kubinak@aol.com
from the KWP
Sumner was assigned to the 8213nd AU, which became the 8th Army
Rangers later. He was from Richmond County, NY.

I found more info on my relative that was MIA in Korea, Sumner John
Kubinak. Didn't know if you'd be interested but thought I would
share. He was awarded the Bronze Star with the V device June 10,
1952 and the Purple Heart Jan 4, 1954. He was also promoted to
Sergeant. Apparently he was transferred to Japan in 49 to attend
the Ord Small Arms School.
Do you have any idea what that is? This info is on this background
material for his Bronze Star. He was scheduled for return July 21,
1950. The Korean action started in June and he was sent to Korea
with the Ord Small Arms Dept.
At the front lines he joined the 8th Army Ranger Company. Apparently
there were involved in a takeover of a hill. "In their sixth
assault, the hostile force gathered its entire strength and launched
a tremendous attack in an attempt to dislodge the friendly troops
from the hill.
Because of the overwhelming numbers of the enemy, instructions were
received by the company to withdraw. As his comrades fell back,
Corporal KUBINAK steadfastly remained in his position in order to
provide covering fire and, when last seen, was still pouring fire
into the ranks of the onrushing enemy with deadly precision..."
That was on his section II AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL. Do you
know much about the 8th Army Ranger Company?
I got these papers copied and sent to me by his nephew and namesake,
Sumner Pearce Kubinak.

still managed to escape and live into his sixties. his grave marker
reads "first rangers in korea". i will look at his marker to see if it
says anything further than "eight army." i told his story in my audio
book "the american storyteller, 19 true stories" and it seems to be the
story that all my listeners like best.

Hal, In checking the units that were attached to the 24th Infantry
Division, you show the 8th Army Ranger Company. This is incorrect. They
were attached to 8th Army Headquarters. The 8th Ranger Company Airborne
was attached to the 24th Infantry Division.
I know because I was the Tank Platoon Leader with Co. "C", 6th Tank Bn.
that rescued them from hill 625 in April 1951. I'm also trying to get
contact with Col. Ranger Robert W. Black, he was in the unit at
that time. Do you have his e-mail address?
